Description

Temperance Hall is a building originally constructed in 1856, located at right angles to Nateby Road in Kirkby Stephen. It was originally used as a Temperance Hall and features an ashlar front with a plinth and rusticated end pilasters, topped with a cornice and parapet. The roof is made of graduated slate and includes a stone chimney at one end.

The building is a single tall storey with three symmetrical bays. There are three steps leading up to a central six-panelled door, which is adorned with a rectangular fanlight and an architrave set on blocks. Above the door, there is a plain medallion on the lintel with foliate scroll consoles that support an open segmental pediment. A statue representing Temperance is positioned within a semicircular-headed niche above the door, supported by a bracket and flanked by a hoodmould with a keystone and inwardly-turned scrolled labels.

On either side of the entrance, there is a tall window featuring five panes and margins, with an architrave that has feet supported on a bracketed sill. Each window also has a plain medallion on the lintel with foliate scroll consoles that carry a cornice. The parapet displays the words "Temperance Hall" in large, raised, sans-serif lettering, and there is a prominent central datestone with scrolled supports that tops the parapet. The facade of the building is painted.
