Description
The Woolwich Building Society, located on Hamilton Street in Girvan, is a mid-19th century building. It is two storeys high and features three bays, with a narrow additional recessed bay on the right. The structure is made of ashlar stone and has a central round-arched, panelled door flanked by pilasters and topped with a keystone, all set beneath a pilastered doorpiece and accessed by seven steps.
The building has a tall plinth and a cill course above the two ground floor bipartite windows, which are adorned with moulded eared architraves and bracketted pediments that feature moulded panels in the frieze. On the first floor, there is a cill course above the windows, which have eared architraves; the outer bays contain bipartite windows, while the central window is a single light with a blind balustrade below.
The eaves course is complemented by a cornice and a balustraded parapet that has a central solid panel. The building features end stacks and a piended slate roof. The return elevation to the east has simple moulded details, with the entrance located in the recessed bay.
