Description
The ice house, located approximately 640 meters to the west of Holker Hall, is a Grade II listed structure recorded in 1732. It is built from dressed stone, slate, and brick, featuring a round design with two tiers, where the top tier is smaller in diameter. The stone walls are covered with earth on the roofs. The entrance is on the west side and has a slate door, leading to two inner doors that open into a passage. Inside, the chamber has a floor that slopes toward a central drain and displays spiral brickwork in the dome. An iron ventilating pipe extends to the top. This ice house is noted as the oldest remaining example in Cumbria, as referenced in the Transactions of the Cumbria and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society from 1981.
