Description

No. 36 Stramongate is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 18th century and includes later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of wet-dashed rubble with rusticated quoins and features a moulded cast-iron gutter supported by modillions. It has a graduated slate roof with slobbered end chimneys. The structure is three storeys high and has three bays. The entrance to St George's Hall, which was built in 1879 and is located at the rear, is accessed through a 20th-century canopy on the left side. On the right side, there is a 20th-century shop front set within a corniced 19th-century surround. Each floor above has three sash windows. It is noted to be the first house in Kendal built with proper plans, specifications, and a contract.
