Description
Steps Farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century, features an adjoining barn and byres, with later additions and alterations. The structure is built of coursed rubble with quoins on a plinth, while the front of the house is stuccoed. It has graduated slate roofs and a stair outshut at the rear. The house is two storeys tall and likely originally had a cross-passage plan with four bays and a byre. On the ground floor, there are two sash windows, a blocked two-light stone-mullioned window in between, and a blocked fire window to the far left, all beneath a drip-course. The right-hand sash window may have replaced the original door. Above, there are three sash windows. To the left, there is a single-bay 18th-century extension with a 20th-century part-glazed door and a sash window above. The chimneys are rendered. The byres are located to the left and right, sharing the same roofline, with a higher barn or byre added at right angles to the far left. The entrances to the barn and byre are located at the rear and returns. Inside, there is a court cupboard built into the wall, possibly from the cross-passage, featuring large moulded doors. A chamfered fire-beam is boxed in, creating shallow cupboards with mouldings similar to those of the court cupboard. There is also a single-storey 20th-century corrugated iron building adjoining the byre on the left, which is not of interest.
