Description
The Spa Well Pavilion and pump head, located to the northwest of Shap Wells Hotel, is a structure likely built in the mid to late 19th century. It is an open pavilion featuring octagonal wooden uprights with upper angle braces, set on chamfered octagonal stone plinth blocks. The roof is pyramidal, covered with fish-scaled Welsh slate and topped with a pointed wooden finial, while the underside is planked with a cornice. The pavilion is octagonal in plan. The pump head is situated on a stone step, consisting of a squat octagonal stone pillar that rises to form a basin with flared sides. A turned wooden post in the center of the basin originally supported the pump handle. The pump was disused at the time of the survey in October 1984.
