Description

This is a milestone or boundary stone located on the east side of the old turnpike road south of Shap, dating from the early 18th century. The stone is square in shape with a domical top, measuring approximately 1 foot wide and 1.5 feet high. The west face of the stone is inscribed with "IO," which may indicate a distance of 10 miles to Kendal.
