Description
Borrowdale Head Farmhouse and the attached barn are likely from the 17th century, with a later outshut. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with the front of the house painted and a slate roof. The east elevation features two storeys and two bays, with the barn located to the north. The ground floor windows are sashed with glazing bars and horns, while the first floor has pivoted casements, with the first bay having paired casements. There is a gabled porch with a return entrance. The building has gable-end stacks and a cross-axial stack. The barn has five small openings and a blocked entrance, with a winnowing door above. The north return includes a pivoted door leading to the cow house entrance. The west elevation has an outshut under a catslide roof and a large squat stack on the left return, which also features a 20th-century lean-to outhouse. The barn door is accessed via a ramp, with the roof raised above the eaves and a lower level entrance. Although the interior of the house was not inspected, it is said to contain a mid-18th century fireplace and cupboard, an early 18th century stair, and originally had a plaster panel of a rose tree, which may now be covered up.
