Description
Derwentfolds and the adjoining barn is a farmhouse, likely originally two houses, dating from the mid-17th century with 19th-century alterations and additions. The building features whitewashed rubble set on large projecting plinth stones, topped by a graduated greenslate roof with rendered and brick chimney stacks. The barn is constructed from a mix of cobbles and slate rubble.
The right part of the farmhouse is two-storey and two-bay, while the left part is a lower two-storey, three-bay section, with a lower barn to the extreme left. The right portion is probably the oldest part of the structure. It has sash windows, with double windows on both floors, all framed in 19th-century painted stone surrounds. The left portion includes a plank door and sash windows with glazing bars, except for two on the right side. The barn features a blank front wall.
At the rear of the oldest part, there is a pent stone porch with a side seat and niche, as well as a semicircular stone staircase that flanks a dairy with slate slab shelves. A coalhouse under the stairs has a 17th-century oak door and hinges. The rear of the other part includes a semicircular stair projection, although the staircase has been removed. The rear of the barn has plank doors and small openings with lofts above.
