Description
The Offwell village pump, dated 1803, is a notable structure in the village, accompanied by boundary walls that likely date from around 1840. The pump is made of hollow Beerstone ashlar and features a square section pier designed in the Decorated Gothic style. On the front (south) side, above the spout, there is a sunken panel with a cusped cinquefoil head. The structure is topped with a plain pyramid that has crocketed corners. A worn inscription encircles the capital, with the date clearly visible on the back. The rear of the pump includes a wooden panel that provides access to the pump workings, and a wrought iron pump handle extends from the right (east) side. In front of the pump, there is a granite trough with chamfered corners and a soffit-moulded lip. The pump is positioned alongside the road, and the surrounding ground is terraced into the hillslope, supported by a flint rubble wall that features Beerstone ashlar posts, square in section with pyramid caps. This pump is part of a group of listed buildings in the village center, many of which are likely the work of Reverend E. Copleston, Bishop of Llandaff and Dean of St Paul's.
