Description
Offwell Village Cross is a cross shaft and plinth from the early 19th century, erected by the Reverend E. Copleston, who was the Bishop of Llandaff and Dean of St. Paul's. It is made of granite ashlar. The cross shaft features vaguely Celtic-looking decoration and has a small niche on the front (south) side. It is set on a slightly tapering plinth made of rusticated granite. An inscription around the plinth reads: "Cruwys and Copplestones when the Conqueror came were at home." This cross is a copy of the 10th-century Copplestones Cross, which is located on the main Exeter to North Devon road at the junction of the parishes of Crediton Hamlets, Down St Mary, and Colebrooke. While the size is similar, the carving on this cross is not accurate.
