Description

The former gatehouse attached to the south-east angle of Sockbridge Hall is a gatehouse that has now been converted into an outbuilding. It is likely from the late 16th century and is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar detailing. The south elevation features a slate roof and is two storeys high with three bays. It has hollow-chamfered mullioned windows, and a central chamfered Tudor-arched passage. To the right of the passage, there is an entrance with a timber lintel. The first floor includes three-light transomed windows beneath a drip course, with small lower projections that have returns. The west end has a blocked three-light transomed window with a label mould on the first floor. There is a chamfered triangular-headed entrance and a later entrance to the first floor accessed by steps, which blocks a window. The east gable end has blocked three-light windows on both floors, and a later lean-to privy with two holes for seating. The north elevation features a segmental arched passage, with a window above that has three round-headed lights, sunk spandrels, and a label mould, which is now blocked. There is also an inserted casement window on the ground floor at the east end. The roof is supported by four tie-beam and strut trusses.
