Description

The building known as Plane Trees and the adjoining houses at the east end of Main Street in Shap is a Grade II listed structure dated 1691, featuring the initials R. & E.I. on the original door lintel. The house has been subdivided and is partly used for storage, while Plane Trees may have been converted from an outbuilding. It is constructed of wet-dashed rubble and has a graduated slate roof with stone coping at the east end, along with stone and rendered chimneys and stone ridges.

The original house is two storeys tall and consists of eight bays in total. The east end of the original house has four bays, featuring a plank door within an original architrave, a window to the left, and an inserted garage door to the right. The west end of the original house has two bays, with a plank door inserted beneath the original two-light window head and a fixed window in a chamfered surround to the right. The Plane Trees section has two bays, with a 19th-century plank door, a small 20th-century casement window to the left, and a 19th-century sash window to the right.

The original house has six Yorkshire sash windows on the first floor, set in original two-light chamfered surrounds, although the mullions have been removed. The first floor of Plane Trees features a 19th-century Yorkshire sash window. An eaves cornice runs the full length of the building, and there are stepped mid and end chimneys on the original house, with the mid and east end chimneys being corniced stone. The end chimney of Plane Trees is rendered. There are also blocked original windows at the rear of the building.
