Description
This is a shopping arcade located on a sloping site in Kendal, built in 1803 for butchers. Later additions and alterations have been made to the structure. The arcade originally comprised twelve shops, some of which have since been combined. It is a single-story building with a graduated slate roof and five stone chimneys, with eaves extended to create a canopy. The shops are characterised by wooden shop fronts separated by paired pilasters. Each shop has a panelled door, except for numbers 3 and 9, which have partially glazed doors. A window is located to the left of the doors for shops 1 to 13, and to the right for shops 15 to 23. Most windows are plate glass, with specific exceptions: shop number 3 has subdivided windows with moulded heads; shop number 11 has two arcaded lights; and shop number 21 has an arcaded two-light sash window. Shop number 1, which now forms the rear of number 19 Market Place, retains panelled shutters. Kicking-boards are panelled throughout, except for shops 9 and 11, which feature plank construction. Most shop fascias are glazed.
