Description

This is a row of eight shops, now serving as shops and a market office, located on The Shambles in Malton. They were built in the early to mid-19th century and feature painted brick on a painted stone plinth. The shops have an overhanging pent roof made of slate, supported by shaped brackets, with hipped and curved ends, and there are four brick stacks. Each shop consists of a single bay, forming a one-storey range with eight bays in total. The shop fronts have a door to the right of the shop window, which sits over a brick riser. The original doors were made of plank and batten, and these have been retained in all shops except No. 5. The original windows featured 15 square panes and were set back to accommodate shutters, as seen in No. 15, while Nos 9 and 11 still have re-set small-pane windows. A continuous louvred ventilation grille runs across the tops of the windows and doors; most have been boarded over, but there are still open ones in Nos 5 and 9. The shop front of No. 1 returns at the left end, facing the Market Place, with a 12-pane window beneath a blocked louvred ventilation grille. The overhanging roof creates a continuous canopy over the shop fronts. Inside, each shop, except No. 7, retains a small fireplace, which is now either blocked off or has a replacement grate, located against the rear wall. Together with Nos 2-16 on The Shambles, these shops represent an interesting example of a planned thoroughfare designed to connect the Market Place with the newly opened Cattle Market. It is noted that these shops were originally butchers' shops.
