Description

Number 2 (part) Skelgate is a row of cottages located on Castle Street in Dalton in Furness, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, with some alterations. The cottages feature pebbledash and cement render over stone, topped with slate roofs. They are two storeys high and have a window arrangement of 1:1:1:2:2 on the first floor.

No. 5, on the left, has a 20th-century door with a margin-glazed overlight in an altered stone architrave, supported by a hood on wooden brackets. The windows on each floor to the left have projecting stone sills and sashes with glazing bars. Nos. 3 and 4 are a mirrored pair, each with doors beneath a shared hood on wooden brackets. They feature renewed bow windows on the ground floor; No. 4 has a plain casement on the first floor, while No. 3 has a casement with glazing bars.

No. 2 has a 20th-century door in a stone surround beneath a wooden hood on brackets, along with boarded doors and a cambered arch leading to a vehicle entrance on the left. It also has 20th-century metal casements with projecting sills and thin surrounds. No. 1 is taller and of a later date, with an altered ground floor that includes a door and sidelight to the right of a large uPVC casement. It features a sill band and thin surrounds to the tall uPVC casements on the first floor. The range has brick end stacks and ridge stacks on the party walls with the mirrored pair. The entrance beneath the window to the right of No. 1 is part of No. 2 Skelgate. These cottages are an important part of the Market Place group.
