Description
No. 2 Skelgate is a small house, likely built in the early 17th century and altered in the early 19th century. It has a cruck-framed core and is finished with pebble-dash, topped with graduated slate and composition tile roofs. The house is two storeys high and features three windows on the first floor. There is a later addition that is set forward on the left side, which adjoins No. 1 Castle Street. The main entrance consists of a broad part-glazed door located to the right of centre, with a 6-pane sash window on the left and 4-pane sashes to the right and on the first floor. The building has six stone gutter blocks. The taller addition on the left has boarded doors leading to a square-headed vehicle entrance below a 4-pane sash window with a projecting sill, and an end stack on the right side.
Inside, the ground-floor ceiling features three cambered transverse beams and common joists, all made of oak. A central cruck truss is partially exposed, along with the remains of another truss at the left end.
