Description
West Lodge is a lodge for Edenhall, built in the 1830s by George Webster for the Musgrave family. It is constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar and features a lead roof with twisted candlestick chimney stacks. The building is single storey and has a cruciform plan with two bays. There are steps leading up to a panelled door set in a stone architrave, which is topped by a console-bracketed hood and is located within a pedimented tetrastyle Ionic porch that has fluted columns. The return walls have casement windows in stone architraves, some of which are two lights with rounded heads. The centre of the return walls features a gable pediment with broad pilasters, and the window recesses are supported on engaged fluted columns. For more on the attribution of this building to Webster, refer to Geoffrey Beard's "The Greater House in Cumbria," published in 1978.
