Description

The Court Yard consists of stables and coach houses for Eden Hall, now converted into seven dwellings and partly used as stables. It was built in 1841 for the Musgrave family by Sir Robert Smirke, who had previously rebuilt Eden Hall in 1821. The building features hammer-dressed red sandstone and ashlar walls, with string courses and pilasters. The roofs are made of graduated greenslate and are topped with banded ashlar chimney stacks.

The structure forms a large two-storey range on three sides of a courtyard, with the fourth side being lower. From the courtyard, the entrance range has a central segmental through archway beneath an octagonal domed cupola, which has clock faces on all four sides. The left three bays are domestic, featuring a 20th-century panelled door and 20th-century sash and casement windows, some of which are located in partly-blocked loft doorways. The right side contains stables with plank doors and casement windows. This range has also served as a coach house, showcasing a series of segmental-arched doorways beneath casement windows with glazing bars set in stone surrounds. The rear range is now primarily domestic, with 20th-century panelled doors and casement windows in original surrounds, including some windows in partly-blocked loft doorways. The left range is also domestic, featuring a panelled door in a stone surround set in an otherwise blank wall. This building is located near the site of the mansion house of Eden Hall, which was demolished in the mid-1930s.
