Description
Edenhall War Memorial is a First World War memorial constructed in 1920 from limestone quarried at Orton Scar. The memorial is prominently situated at a three-way junction in the village of Edenhall, Cumbria, positioned within a roadside enclosure and with open land behind. It consists of a roughly 3-metre-tall wheel-head cross featuring Celtic knotwork on its front face. This sits atop a tapering shaft bearing relief-carved dates of 1914–1918, and is set on a tapering, four-sided plinth raised on a two-stepped square base. The plinth and base of the cross feature inscriptions in leaded lettering, accompanied by carved wreaths. Inside the roadside enclosure, plaques bearing the names of those who served and returned are affixed to capped piers, all displaying lettering in lead. The enclosure itself is separated from the road by two cast iron posts connected by chains. The inscription, in leaded lettering, reads: '1914 / 1918 // (NAMES) // WE LIE DEAD IN FOREIGN LANDS / THAT YOU MAY LIVE HERE IN PEACE' and on the roadside plaques, 'NAMES (of those who returned)'.
