Description
Reagill Grange is a large house that dates back to the late 16th century, with a mention in the parish register from 1590. The land was originally owned by Shap Abbey and was purchased by the Wharton family after the Dissolution. The house underwent later additions and alterations, including the addition of a first floor to the rear wing in 1700, marked by the initials T. & E.D. (for Daws) on the lintel of a blocked first-floor door.
The building is constructed from coursed, squared rubble with quoins and features a boulder plinth at the original structure. The front is pebble-dashed, and it has graduated slate roofs with stone copings. The plan is 'L'-shaped, with two storeys and four bays. A full-height gabled porch includes a side entrance with a studded plank door in a chamfered surround that has a false four-centred head. The porch windows are two-light, stone-mullioned with chamfered surrounds beneath hoodmoulds.
To the left, there are three multi-light windows on each floor, which have had their mullions removed and Yorkshire sashes inserted, all under continuous hoodmoulds. The ground floor right features a three-light window, and there are two similar windows on each floor of the south elevation of the original house, all with square leaded lights. The rear wing has string-courses and lean-tos, and tapered cylindrical chimneys with square, stepped bases.
Inside, there is a newel stair with stone steps leading to the first floor and wooden steps to the attic, located in a full-height stair wing added at the rear. The ground floor includes a large segmental arch leading to an inglenook fireplace.
