Large house. Lands originally owned by Shap Abbey, bought by Wharton family after Dissolution. Present house probably late C16 (1590 mention in Parish Register). Later additions and alterations include addition of 1st floor to rear wing in 1700 (date, with initials T. & E.D. - for Daws - on lintel of blocked 1st floor door). Coursed, squared rubble with quoins; boulder plinth to original building. Front is pebble-dashed. Graduated slate roofs with stone copings. 'L'-shaped plan. 2 storeys, 4 bays. Full-height gabled porch has side entrance with studded plank door in chamfered surround with false 4-centred head; porch windows are 2-light, stone-mullioned, with chamfered surrounds under hoodmoulds. 3 multi-light windows to left on each floor under continuous hoodmoulds have had mullions removed and Yorkshire sashes inserted; 3-light window to ground floor right and 2 similar windows to each floor on south elevation of original house, all square-leaded. String-courses and lean-to's on rear wing. Tapered cylindrical chimneys with square, stepped bases. Interior: Newel stair (stone steps to 1st floor, wooden to attic) in full-height stair wing added at rear; large segmental arch to inglenook fireplace on ground floor.
