Description

Carlton House is a large house built in the early 19th century, with a late 18th-century wing at the rear. It features deeply-coursed, dressed sandstone and a stone slate roof. The house has two storeys and five bays, with a lower three-bay wing to the rear left and additional structures in the rear-right angle.

The entrance front has three steps leading to a central double door with margin-light glazing, a three-pane overlight, and a lintel that is tooled to resemble voussoirs. The other ground-floor bays have projecting sills for the sashes, which have glazing bars and are topped with similar lintels. The first floor has unequally-hung nine-pane sashes. The house has gutter brackets and a hipped roof, with ashlar stacks at the rear.

On the left side, the wing has raised quoins and a round-arched panel that encloses an added bay window beneath a four-pane sash. There is a tripartite window beneath a sash on the left and a French window beneath a four-pane sash on the right. A brick end stack is located on the left, with a ridge stack to the right.

Inside, a glazed partition in the hall features an elliptical fanlight with radial glazing bars. The front rooms have contemporary fireplaces, with the left room showcasing Adam-style plaster decoration and the right room featuring wooden Ionic columns. There are also contemporary friezes and ceiling centre panels. Carlton House was formerly the home of the Dowager Countess of Wharncliffe and served as a curate's house until a vicarage was built in 1880. An attached dwelling at the rear is not of special interest.
