Description
The garden structure located southeast of Yew Tree Farmhouse dates from around 1836. It features an irregular composition of ashlar and rubble sandstone and is roughly rectangular in shape, built at the intersection of two earth embankments. The north face has a deep arched recess to the west, and there is a flight of steps on the north face leading to the west face. The flanking walls are adorned with sculpture, and a flight of steps extends to an upper level that goes eastwards, culminating in a projecting wall on the east face that terminates at an ashlar pier, which serves as a plinth for an urn.
Historically, this garden structure is associated with Yew Tree Farmhouse, an 18th-century farmhouse that was extended in the 19th century. It was the home of Thomas Bland (1799-1856), a self-taught sculptor, painter, and composer. Bland created a garden of three terraces that opened in 1837 to commemorate Queen Victoria's accession to the throne. The garden features a significant number of Bland's known works, including sculptures of animals, urns, and figures, some depicted in classical attire and others in modern dress. This unique garden is recognized on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
