Description
The Village Hall, which was formerly a school, features two dates on the inner door lintel: 1684, marked with the initials R.S. for the Reverend Randal Sanderson, who endowed the school, and 1702, presented within a Greek inscription. A Roman letter inscription above one of the windows states, "Them that are meek the Lord shall guide in judg-/ment, & such as are gentle, them shall he learn his way." The building is constructed from mixed materials, including squared, coursed rubble and blocks, with quoins. It has a graduated slate roof with stone kneelers and coping on the north gable. The structure is single storey and consists of three bays. The entrance is located on the east side, accessed through an added porch. The 19th-century two-light mullioned windows are diamond-leaded, and a three-light window in the north gable has been reused from Crosby Ravensworth parish church. There is a stepped chimney at the eaves on the east side and a gabled bellcote on the north gable.
