Description

Maulds Meaburn Hall is a large house, likely rebuilt in the late 16th century for the Vernon family, with additions and alterations made from various periods up to the 20th century. The earlier sections are constructed of ashlar stone on a chamfered plinth, while the later work is made of coursed, squared rubble. The building features graduated slate roofs and has an asymmetrical plan, primarily consisting of two storeys with attics.

The front entrance has a panelled door located in a 19th-century rebuilt single-storey section, flanked by two sash windows on the left. The main block to the north includes a two-light stone-mullioned window that has been inserted where a doorway once was, and a casement window has been added under a hoodmould to the right. On the first floor, there are two multi-light stone mullioned-and-transomed windows under hoodmoulds, along with a three-light stone mullioned window in a gabled dormer above. Additional inserted windows can be seen on the gable end of the north wing, while the gable end of the south wing features a part-glazed door in a chamfered surround with a dated lintel above. This lintel originally read 1610 but was recut to read 1676 when the stair wing was added. Many original multi-light windows remain on other elevations, and the house is topped with corniced stone chimneys.

Inside, the hall retains several early features, including panelled doors throughout, a spiral stone staircase, and a large stepped stone fire hood over the fireplace in the kitchen. A particularly notable feature is the fine dog-leg, closed string staircase dating from around 1676, which has large turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newels with applied carved decoration and ball finials.
