Description

The Monks' Bridge crosses the River Lyvennet. It is a road bridge, likely dating to the 17th century, although first mentioned in 1702. Local tradition associates it with a grange belonging to Whitby Abbey. The bridge is constructed of coursed, squared rubble, featuring two segmental arches, each approximately 18 feet in span, with a central cutwater. The original roadway was about 8 feet wide and has been widened, as evidenced in the underside of the structure. Low stone parapets line the roadway and are topped with tubular railings of no particular interest.
