Description
Monks' Bridge House is a house that was originally a school, built in 1666 and remodelled in 1784 for William Dent. It features two inscriptions: one in Roman lettering on the frieze stating, "THIS SCHOOL was rebuilt by a private Benefactor in the year of our LORD 1784," and another in script on the door lintel reading, "Ingredere ut proficia." The building is constructed of ashlar with a chamfered plinth and rusticated quoins, while the gable ends are made of coursed, squared rubble. It has a graduated slate roof with stone copings and kneelers, and a 'T'-shaped plan. The house is a single storey with a plank door set in a pedimented architrave, accompanied by a single fixed window to the right and a paired window in the wing on the left, all featuring impost blocks and keystones in semicircular-headed stone surrounds. Large semicircular-headed casements are present on the gable ends. Additionally, there is a corniced stone chimney over the south gable, a bellcote over the west, and an ornate ball finial over the east.
