Description

House. Dating from the mid-16th century, originally built for the Pickering family (whose coat-of-arms sits above the front door), and incorporating a 14th-century tower, Ravensworth Hall stands on the site of a former moat that was filled in during the mid-18th century. Later additions and alterations occurred, including a mid-19th-century remodelling. The house is constructed of coursed, squared rubble, with the front facing being wet-dashed. It has graduated slate roofs, with a hipped profile on the north end and wing. The building follows a ‘T’ shaped plan, with two storeys and a total of four bays (three bays on the left and one on the right). The front features a panelled door with two two-light windows on each floor to the left, one window to each floor in the right wing, and a single-light window above. All openings have chamfered surrounds and hoodmoulds with labels. Original mullioned-and-transomed windows were replaced in the 19th century with the current windows, which retain pointed inner heads and wooden mullions. A stepped, rendered chimney is also a feature.
