Description
Flass House is a Grade II* listed Palladian villa, rebuilt around 1848 to 1861, possibly incorporating parts of an 18th-century house, for Lancelot and Wilkinson Dent. The architects were Mr. Gray until about 1854 and Mr. G Mair afterwards, with the interior fitted out by Gillows of Lancaster. The exterior features a stucco finish, rusticated pilasters, and dressed stone detailing, along with the remains of a contemporary cast-iron conservatory at the south end. The villa has graduated slate roofs with projecting eaves and an asymmetrical plan, primarily consisting of two storeys with attics and a three-storey tower.
The symmetrical west elevation of the main house has four bays arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. Each wing features a projecting flat-roofed bay on the ground floor with a tall tripartite window at the front and French windows on the sides, while the two central bays have tall casements. A string-course separates the floors, and there are corniced tripartite windows above each projecting bay, with small Diocletian windows in the gables. The segment-headed windows in the two central bays have moulded sills and hoods, and the building is topped with a dentilled eaves cornice. A central dormer window is positioned between two clasping stone chimney stacks, and there are numerous corniced stone chimneys.
Inside, the house boasts a very high standard of detailing and decoration, featuring a cubic entrance hall with a first-floor gallery and an etched glass dome. The gallery has cast-iron panels, and the staircase is adorned with splats. Ornate fireplaces and plasterwork can be found throughout the interior.
