Description

Nos. 1-4 and No. 5, The Bakery, on Chester Terrace is a terrace of five cottages, with the right-hand one functioning as a bakery on the ground floor. The buildings likely date from the 17th century, with remodels in the 19th century and later alterations. The first three cottages (Nos. 1-3) feature scored stucco, partly covering timber framing, while Nos. 4 and 5 have roughcast render on the upper floor and scored stucco on the lower. The terrace has a graduated greenslate roof with a stone ridge and stands two storeys high, with the upper floor overhanging the lower.

There are six irregularly placed windows, featuring 19th-century sashes with vertical glazing bars on the upper floor. Each ground floor property has one panelled door and one window, with variations: No. 3 has a bay window supported by columns, and Nos. 4 and 5 have tripartite windows with slender timber columns acting as mullions and a single horizontal glazing bar for each light. The upper floor of Nos. 4 and 5 is supported by five Tuscan columns and one squared timber upright at the right-hand corner.

There are three stone chimneys on the terrace. The return elevation of No. 5, facing The Square, includes three windows: an early 19th-century small-paned sash, a vertical glazing bar window over the passage, and a Venetian window with interlaced glazing bars above the passage leading to the rear. The ground floor features a four-light window similar to those on the Main Street elevation.
