Description

The Burgh by Sands War Memorial is made of Aberdeen granite and is situated in the Church of St Michael’s Cemetery Extension in Burgh By Sands. The memorial features a wheel-head cross on top of a rectangular tapered shaft, which is placed on a two-tiered tapered plinth and a single-stepped base.

The front face of the upper tier of the plinth is inscribed with "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The lower tier bears the inscription "THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR FREEDOM AND FOR HONOUR THEIR EXAMPLE WILL BE AN ABIDING INSPIRATION." The other faces of the memorial list the names of the fallen. On the back, there is a later inscription that reads "IN MEMORY OF THE ABOVE WHO FELL IN WORLD WAR II 1939 – 1945."
