Description

MATERIALS: Aberdeen granite.

DESCRIPTION: the memorial is located in the Church of St Michael’s Cemetery Extension in Burgh By Sands. It comprises a wheel-head cross surmounting a rectangular tapered shaft. The shaft is set upon a two-tiered tapered plinth and a single-stepped base.

The front face of the upper tier of the plinth is inscribed IN / MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918. Below on the lower tier is THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR FREEDOM AND FOR HONOUR / THEIR EXAMPLE WILL BE / AN ABIDING INSPIRATION. The other faces are inscribed with the names of the fallen. On the back is the later inscription IN MEMORY OF THE ABOVE / WHO FELL IN WORLD WAR II / 1939 – 1945.
