Description
The Bishop Middleham War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Michael and All Angels, which is also a listed building. The memorial features a dark polished granite wheel-head cross that rises from a tapering square plinth with a granite base. It is positioned on a two-stepped sandstone base.
The main dedicatory inscription is carved into the north face of the plinth, stating: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ BISHOP MIDDLEHAM/ AND MAINSFORTH/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." Below this, on the base, is the quote: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS." The names of those who served in the First World War are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth. Additionally, there is a sandstone tablet on the south side of the cross, shaped like a book, which commemorates those who died during the Second World War, inscribed with: "ALSO THE FOLLOWING WHO DIED ON ACTIVE/ SERVICE DURING THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 1945" followed by eight names.
