Description
Mainsforth Hall south entrance gate piers and gates are located on the east boundary and were formerly the entrance to Mainsforth Hall, which has since been demolished. The gate piers date from the early 18th century and were restored in the 19th century, while the gates were made in the late 19th or early 20th century. The piers are constructed from sandstone ashlar and feature wrought iron gates. The right pier has been partly renewed. The square rusticated piers include plinths, collars, and cornices, topped with stepped coping that curves into large pineapple finials. The inner wrought iron panels support the gates, which are divided into four square panels and topped with high clusters of scrolls. Each panel is further divided into quarters and decorated with scrolls, water leaves, and pierced tendrils, with the lower panels featuring more decoration than the upper ones. The side panels are designed in a similar style.
