Description

This early 18th-century house and two cottages is located on the north side of High Street, Bishop Middleham. Approximately 1900 alterations were also made. The building is constructed of painted rough render with painted ashlar dressings, a boulder plinth on the right return, and a roof of French tiles with stone gable copings and rendered and brick chimneys.

The two-storey range has five first-floor windows. A three-bay house occupies the left side, featuring a renewed central door within flat Tuscan door case detailing, topped with a prominent cornice. Around 1900, square ground-floor bay windows with four front lights and matching returns, topped with cornices, were added. The windows throughout have glazing bars, and the three first-floor sash windows have projecting sills. Two single-bay cottages are attached to the left, each with a sash window and a central door – the left one being three-panelled with an overlight. The steeply pitched roof has moulded kneelers supporting a gable coping on the right end, along with a banded and rendered end chimney. A banded brick chimney is situated at the left end and to the right of the third bay. The right return features a small, renewed first-floor window and a single throughstone in the gable peak.

The interior has not been inspected.

The house and cottages are designated at group value for their good survival of historic fabric and intact exterior, which retains much character. The building also demonstrates two different forms of early 18th-century townhouse construction.
