Description
The structure is a garden wall located to the west of The Hall, featuring steps, piers, and gates. It runs from the northern boundary of the Hall's garden along Church Street and continues along the boundary with the graveyard of the Church of St. Michael, extending approximately 200 metres south of the Hall where the ground slopes down. The wall includes interruptions for gates and gate piers at the entrance to Church Street and steps and gate piers at the entrance to the churchyard.
Constructed in the late 17th century, the wall has early 18th-century piers and mid-18th-century gates. The wall is made of thinly-rendered rubble, primarily limestone, with a brick coping. The piers and steps are made of ashlar, and the gates are wrought iron.
At the northern end, the wall stands about 4 metres high, partly retaining the garden, and as the lane rises, the wall decreases to approximately 2 metres. Along the churchyard, the wall is about 1.3 metres high on the east side and 3 metres high on the west side, retaining the churchyard. The southern section features coping made of brick laid on the sides, with sloping bricks placed wide faces up to form shoulders. There are side steps leading from the garden to the churchyard entrance, which is marked by two tall, slender square piers with cornices and stepped coping. The entrance to Church Lane is defined by corniced square piers with moulding below the top bands and plain square coping, along with scroll brackets from the wall coping and eroded leaf brackets on the inner pilasters.
The gates curve gently up to the piers and feature spiked head dogbars and principals.
