Description
The Midland Bank, located at No 15 on King Street in Wigton, is a house converted into a bank, dating from the mid-18th century. It features painted stucco with a modillioned cornice on a moulded plinth, and has a graduated greenslate roof with rebuilt brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and has four bays, with an additional bay to the right above an archway. Access is via five steps leading to a four-panel door set within a dentilled and ornamented Doric doorcase that has panelled reveals. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are framed by painted stone architraves, with those on the ground floor adorned with dentilled cornices. The segmental archway is surrounded by alternate block surrounds, and the lower part features cast-iron bollards to prevent wear. On the side wall under the archway, there is a lintel from an earlier house above a window inscribed with "I. & F.B. 1674" alongside a coat of arms. A 20th-century extension at the rear is not of interest.
