Description
Hyssop Holme Well is a natural spring well located in Carlisle, dated 1817, with repairs made in 1986. It is constructed from red sandstone rubble and is set into the side of a high bank. The well features a serpentine wall that slopes away on either side, a central recessed bowl, and a cast-iron pipe beneath a dated keystone, with chamfered coping above. There are steps leading down to a soakaway beneath the well head. Nearby, an inscribed stone notes the restoration carried out by the Keep Britain Tidy Group, sponsored by the Manpower Services Commission, as reported in the Cumberland News on 10 October 1986. The water from this well was historically used to supply hot and cold water baths in the vicinity.
