Description

A terrace of thirteen houses with a corner property, numbers 5 to 29 Chiswick Street, Carlisle, and number 1 Currie Street, was built in the late 1840s and late 1850s. The houses are constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, with lighter-coloured headers on numbers 25 to 29. They stand on a chamfered plinth with painted stone dressings, and feature an eaves cornice. The roofs are covered in slate and incorporate shared brick chimney stacks.

The houses are generally two storeys and two bays each, although number 5 and number 1 Currie Street have three bays, and number 29 has a three-bay return onto Currie Street. Each house originally had a right-hand panelled door with a fanlight, set within a pilastered surround, except for number 29 where the door is on the left side. The windows are sash windows set in plain brick reveals, with stone sills and flat brick arches, some with glazing bars. Two houses now have inserted squared and canted bay windows at ground floor level. Numbers 9 to 17 have scrolled iron brackets, remnants of a first-floor balcony that has been removed. Number 5 has a quoined carriage archway, with a window above.

The interiors have not been inspected. Asquith's Survey of Carlisle from 1853 depicts only six houses starting from number 5; the remaining houses appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1865.
