Description

Blackhall Wood Farmhouse and the adjoining barn date from the 1740s, incorporating earlier features. The farmhouse has mixed red and yellow coursed sandstone rubble walls, a slate roof with a bottom course of stone-slates, and brick chimney stacks. It is two storeys high with two bays and a double span, and it adjoins an earlier house to the left. The farmhouse features double sash windows with glazing bars and plain painted surrounds. The entrance has a moulded surround and architrave, leading to a six-panel door. The building has rusticated quoins and coped gables with kneelers.

Connected to the farmhouse is the original house, which has a lower roof line. At the rear, there is a filled entrance with a carved lintel stone inscribed with raised lettering "I.B., M.B. 1695." To the left are two 19th-century casement windows with glazing bars, and to the right is an 18th-century barn entrance with a loft entrance above and slit vents. The barn is constructed of the same stone as the house, with a slate roof and brick chimney stack. The gable wall and south wall are made of river cobbles with sandstone quoins, and there are remains of a chamfered mullioned window, now reduced to a single light and partly filled in on the south wall. The deeds for the property date back to 1602, and the farmhouse may incorporate an even earlier building. The listing does not include other farm buildings.
