Description
Moorthwaite and the adjoining barn is a farmhouse and barn complex dated 1691, with an extension from 1731. The building is constructed from whitewashed sandstone rubble with flush quoins, while the extensions and barn are made of brick. It features a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with brick chimney stacks. The farmhouse has two storeys and two bays, with a higher two-storey, three-bay extension to the left and a single-storey, two-bay barn to the left at right angles, which has been partly converted into part of the house.
The main entrance has a 20th-century door in a chamfered surround with an inscribed and dated lintel. There are replacement sash windows with glazing bars set in painted stone surrounds. The extension includes a 20th-century door in a stone architrave with a dated and inscribed lintel, as well as sash windows with glazing bars in painted stone architraves. A blocked fire window is located to the left of the entrance. The barn features sash windows with glazing bars in 20th-century painted stone surrounds, flanked by decorative open brick vents on two levels. The left end wall has a large projecting 20th-century bay window. Part of the barn is still used as a barn or garage, with a large cart entrance at the rear.
Inside the 1731 extension, there is an inglenook with a heck partition and a firebeam, along with a spice cupboard recess to the right of the original stone fireplace. The ceiling is beamed.
