Description
Moorthwaite Cottage with adjoining former barn is a former farmhouse and attached outbuilding, which has been subdivided and refurbished to form a single dwelling. It is dated 1691 and 1692 but includes parts of an earlier structure, with later remodelling. The building is constructed of rubble sandstone with squared dressings, some areas rendered and painted, and features stone slate and slate roof coverings.
The house has a T-shaped plan, with a late 17th century front range built across an earlier range to the rear, which was originally a house and outbuilding. The front elevation is two storeys high with three bays and a single bay extension to the left under a common roof. The off-centre doorway has a massive chamfered stone surround, with the lintel inscribed "A.& P.P. 1691". Above the lintel, an inscribed panel reads "P.P. A.P. 1692. VIVAT REX". Flanking the doorway are 20th century restored three-light flush mullioned windows with eight-pane casement frames. The extension features lower six-pane sash windows on both floors, and all openings have painted stone surrounds.
The rear range has opposed doorways at the centre, each with stone surrounds and 20th century part-glazed doors. To the left of the doorway are two-light mullioned windows, with two-over-two pane sashes above. There are later inserted windows to the right of the doorway, and the rear wall has some former breathers that are now glazed. A lean-to offshoot on the rear wall abuts the main range. Inside the rear range, there is a cross passage and a heck wall that features a hearth bressumer, with a plain 19th century surround set within the hearth recess.
