Description

This listing describes a terrace of seven houses located on Devonshire Street in Carlisle, which has been converted into a public house and six shops with office and storage space above. Built in the 1830s, the terrace has undergone alterations in the 1870s and 1880s, with further changes made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar, featuring a sill band and eaves cornice, and topped with a slate roof and original brick chimney stacks.

The terrace is three storeys high and generally consists of two bays, except for Nos. 3 and 5, which have three bays. No. 29 on Lowther Street has two bays facing Devonshire Street and a two-bay return on Lowther Street. The layout is double-depth. Nos. 1 (The Friars), 3, 5, and 29 Lowther Street still have their original stone shop fronts from the 1870s or 1880s, which include carved details, although 20th-century windows have been inserted. No. 7 (Hodgsons) retains its early 20th-century wooden framed shop front, while Nos. 9 to 13 feature late 20th-century shop fronts. Above the shops, there are sash windows, some with glazing bars, set in stone reveals, with the upper floor windows being smaller. The interiors of the ground floors have been extensively altered.
