Description

A terrace of eleven houses, numbered 1-21, located on Tait Street in Carlisle, was constructed in the early 1850s. One of the houses has been converted into a shop. The buildings are built of Flemish bond brickwork, featuring lighter-colored headers, and sit atop a chamfered plinth with painted stone dressings. They are finished with a stone-bracketed metal gutter and a roof covered in local slate, topped with shared 19th-century brick chimney stacks, one of which has been rebuilt.

The terrace is two storeys high, with each house originally having two bays. Numbers 13-21 have a higher roof line and a double-depth plan. Those numbers (13-21) have doorways on the left and right, flanking a central dividing through-passage. These doorways feature panelled doors (some dating to the 20th century), accessed by steps, and are set within in antis surrounds beneath radial fanlights, all within brick reveals. The through-passage doorways have plank doors and overlights within brick reveals and a stone lintel. Houses 1-11 have similar doorways but without the through passage. Windows are sash and casement types, set in painted surrounds; No.13 has glazing bars on the first floor, and No.1 has a 20th-century shop window on the ground floor. Basement windows are lit by pavement grilles. The interiors were not inspected for the listing.

These buildings do not appear on the 1851 census records, but are shown on Asquith's Survey of 1853.
