Description
No. 6 Round Town is a cottage dating from the late 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th or 17th century and the 19th century. It is constructed from uncoursed limestone rubble and features a slate roof, with brick stacks on the left gable and left of center. The building has a two-unit lobby entry plan and stands two storeys high with two bays.
The central doorway is framed by a 19th-century gabled stone and timber porch, which includes a four-panel door and sidelights. On either side of the doorway, there are three-light windows with wooden lintels and 20th-century casements. The first floor has similar windows. At the rear, there is an extension that likely dates to the 17th century.
Inside, the cottage showcases raised cruck construction. The soot-stained rafters above the central fireplace indicate that there was once an open hearth. One ground floor room features girders and stop-chamfered joists, while another room has a moulded joist, suggesting late 17th-century alterations. The interior also includes stud partitions, an open fireplace with a bread oven, and a stone stair located in a rectangular turret at the rear. There is evidence of an earlier fixed vertical wooden ladder.
