Description

The Gardeners House at Althorp is a mid-18th century building designed by Roger Morris. It is constructed from lias ashlar and features a slate roof. The house has a two-unit plan and is a single storey with an attic. The north elevation consists of three bays, highlighted by an open central Venetian arcade with a moulded keystone, flanked by single arcades that project forward with an open arcade on the return wall. Above this, there is a cornice with a parapet, and the central portion features an open balustrade flanked by blind oculi. The roof is pyramid-shaped, with central and lateral ashlar stacks, and includes a dormer with a pediment and Diocletian casements. Beneath the arcade, there is a central alcove with a marble reclining figure, flanked by sash windows with glazing bars under flat arches. The arcade has a vaulted ceiling. The rear of the building is plain and symmetrical, featuring a central six-panelled door with a pediment above, flanked by casement windows with leaded lights. There are similar dormers on all sides of the pyramid roof. Lean-to extensions, likely from the 20th century, are present on both the left and right sides.
