Althorp, West Lodges (South)

The West Lodges (south) at Althorp, built around 1730, consist of a lodge and gatepier with gates. Constructed from lias ashlar and topped with a slate roof, the lodge features a two-unit plan with a cross-wing. It has a two-window range of two-light casements with transoms and leaded lights, all set under flat arches. The cross wings are topped with steep pediments, and there is a central stone stack. The entrance, located on the side facing the gates, has a Gibbs surround and a 19th-century studded door, with a dormer window above. To the left of the lodge, there is a rusticated gatepier with ball finials, accompanied by a wrought iron hand gate with spikes and a wrought iron carriage gate with spikes. A wrought iron lamp bracket is positioned over the handgate. There is a 20th-century extension to the right. The lodge, gates, and gatepier are paired with the West Lodge (north). The interior has not been inspected.
