Description
The planting stone at Althorp dates from around 1624 and is made of limestone ashlar. It is a rectangular block with a moulded head, set on a plinth that features an inscription stating, "This wood was planted by Sir William Spencer Knight of the Bathe in the year of our Lord 1624," along with the Spencer coat of arms above it. The reverse side of the stone carries the inscription, "Up and bee doing and God will prosper." The stone is enclosed by railings with spikes.
