Description
This is a datestone located at Althorp, dating from the early 17th century. It is made of limestone ashlar and takes the form of a rectangular block set on a plinth. The stone bears the inscription, "This wood was planted by Sir John Spencer Knight, Grandfather of Robert Lord Spencer in the years of our Lord 1567 and 1568," along with the Spencer arms above. The datestone is enclosed by railings with spikes and was erected following the conferment of the title of Baron in 1603.
