Description

The Althorp Falconry or Hawking Tower is a Grade I listed hunting lodge built around 1611. It is constructed of lias ashlar and features a slate roof. The building has a T-plan layout, consisting of two storeys and an attic with three bays. The central cross wing forms a gabled porch that includes an arched entrance with open arcaded sides. On either side of the porch are flanking casements with leaded lights and intersecting glazing bars, topped with plain arched heads. The first floor has a blank arcade with windows arranged in a 2:3:2 pattern, each featuring a keystone and a central casement window. A moulded string course separates the first and second floors. The gabled roof is adorned with ashlar parapets, kneelers, and obelisks, while a lateral stone stack is located at the rear. The porch gable displays a large coat of arms, which is mirrored on the right gable. The side elevations are similar, showcasing ground and first floor arcades, with some casements present. There is also a similar 19th-century single-storey wing at the rear. Inside, the hall features two arcaded openings with keystones. The room to the left of the hall contains a 19th-century fireplace decorated with Delft tiles. A dogleg staircase to the right of the entrance has a moulded stone handrail. The tower was originally designed with an open arcaded first floor for spectators to watch falconry events.
