Description
The planting stone at Althorp is a commemorative structure dating from around 1897. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a rectangular block with a moulded head, set on a plinth. The plinth bears an inscription that reads, "In commemoration of the 60th year of Queen Victoria's reign these oaks were planted by the family at the wish of John Poyntz 5th Earl Spencer K.G. and Charlotte Countess Spencer AD 1897." Above the inscription is the Spencer coat of arms. The stone is enclosed by railings topped with spikes.
